Herbal Home Remedies for Heartburn and Acid Reflux

Posted by admin on March 13th, 2010 and filed under herbal remedies | 3 Comments »

When you are suffering from heartburn, the main thing that you want to do is to stop the pain. Today’s medical knowledge of heartburn has led to the development to various drugs that have the ability to stop or ease heartburn. However if you want to try alternative forms of medication, then what are the remedies that you have available to you?

There are some Herbal heartburn remedies that have been known and used for quite some time now. The three most commonly used herbal remedies are chamomile, which is botanically known as Matricaria Recutita. Peppermint which is also botanically known as Mentha Piperita and Ginger that is botanically known as Zingiber Officinale.

These three herbal heartburn remedies fall into a group of herbs that are described by the General Nutrition Center as “carminative”. They all have the ability to relieve indigestion and ease irritation that occurs in the intestines. The herb chamomile is traditionally recognized for its calming properties. As chamomile has a high calcium content it has the ability to decrease stomach acid. Therefore chamomile is thought to help ease esophageal irritation and help with proper digestion.

Ginger has been used traditionally for dealing with many different gastrointestinal (stomach) problems. Ginger also has some anti-inflammatory as well as anti-nausea properties. Both these actions of ginger give relief to heartburn sufferers. There is one other action that ginger is widely known for. Ginger is a very good herbal heartburn remedy as it aids in the proper digestion process by promoting spontaneous intestinal movement.

Peppermint is also thought to have healing properties against indigestion. Peppermint also has the additional property of calming the stomach. A study that was done of peppermint in combination with the caraway fruit found that they have the same ease of relieving the symptoms of heartburn as Chamomile and Ginger do.

The General Nutrition Center has suggested that herbs that have a “bitter digestive stimulant” property might be used as well. They believe that theses herbs may produce natural digestive enzymes. Herbs like blessed thistle are advocated in the hopes that they will alleviate heartburn. As there is no clear way of knowing their effects, blessed thistle and other such herbs are not as universally recommended.

Whereas chamomile, ginger and peppermint are known and recognized for their potential as a herbal heartburn remedy. As with all medications, you should consult a doctor before you begin using any sort of herbal remedy. This way you can take care that the herbal heartburn remedy will not conflict with your other ongoing medicational treatments.

So, if you want to go ‘chemical free’ in your quest to find your heartburn cure, then I suggest you go about finding your own herbal heartburn remedy now. After all there’s time like the present!

Are Herbal Remedies for Ear Infection in Dogs Effective?

Posted by admin on March 12th, 2010 and filed under herbal remedies | No Comments »

When it comes to ear infection in dogs, a lot of pet owners are doubtful as to whether or not the problem can truly be solved by herbal remedies. The use of herbs and natural treatments either for a person or for an animal is not yet widely accepted.

However, there are times when owners are left with no other choice but to use these over-the-kitchen-counter remedies rather than give nothing to their ailing pets at all.

When it comes to ear infections, it is important that you first determine the very thing that is causing the infection. Most ear infections are caused by mites. But don’t outwardly assume so. Better to first inspect the ears of your pet thoroughly. Ear infection may also be caused by foreign objects finding its way inside the dog’s ear. If you can, bring your pet to the vet. Otherwise, go to the kitchen and find herbal remedies like apple cider vinegar or cod liver oil to help ease the discomfort.

If you decide to give an herbal treatment therapy to your pet, it is necessary that you take note of its improvement. If you don’t see anything positive happening to your dog since you have applied the cure, you might as well stop it because your dog is not responsive to the treatment anyway. This is also a sign that you really have to take the dog to the vet before anything worse happen to it.

The veterinarian would normally prescribe antibiotics to your pet. Depending on the condition of its ear, oral medicines may be given. Otherwise, topical treatments would suffice. You have to be very consistent when giving your dog these medicines because any changes in the schedule or dosage may affect the rate of recovery of your pet.

You might think that ear infection in dogs is a minor problem. However, your dog could be suffering a lot from it and is just not exhibiting pain. When left untreated for weeks, dog ear infection may lead to total loss of hearing. Worse, your dog may develop a much severe disease because of it. Ear infections may lead to brain problems because the pus and the bacteria start to penetrate your dog’s head. When this occurs, it would be a lot harder to treat your dog. No herbal remedy, or any other type of medicine for that matter, can truly help it.

Therefore, you should always check your dog’s ear whenever you can. Dog breeds that wear their ear down are most susceptible to ear infections because air is not properly circulating around it. As such, you have to periodically take your dog to the grooming center just to make sure that its ears are clean and healthy at all times.

Keep in mind that you don’t have to physically clean the ears of your dog. Dogs have a natural way of keeping their ears healthy. Your job is to merely check that there’s no pus, foul smell, or discharges abnormally coming out of their ears. When you observe any of these, better take your dog to the vet right away for proper diagnosis.

    Herbal Remedies For Arthritis

Posted by admin on March 11th, 2010 and filed under herbal remedies | 4 Comments »

Herbal Remedies have been the treatment of choice for arthritis for centuries. Below are listed some of the most effective herbs and supplements for arthritis.

    Alfalfa

Alfalfa can be sprouted and eaten with a salad, or used either powdered or drunk as a tea. It’s easily prepared by placing one ounce of alfalfa in a pot, adding one quart of water and boiling for thirty minutes and should be strained and drunk over a day. The treatment needs to be continued for at least three weeks and then a break for seven to ten days is taken before resuming treatment again for best results.

    Black Cohosh

Black Cohosh is an American Indian treatment for arthritis. There are five species being used globally. The constituents are anti-inflammatory, antispasmodics and aspirin like substances which makes it an excellent herbal remedy for arthritis.

This can be prepared by simmering one teaspoon of black cohosh root in one cup of boiling water for duration of twenty minutes. The tea is then strained and taken in two divided doses during the day. The regime is continued for duration of three weeks before taking a break of ten days in between.

    Boswellia

Boswellia has been known for centuries as a natural anti-inflammatory. It has been proven that boswellic acids contained within the herb can block the formation of leukotrienes, the immune cells responsible for inflammation, while also promoting the formation of free radicals. With regular use, blood supply to the joints is also maintained, keeping soft tissue nourished and viable.

    Celery

Celery as a natural remedy for arthritis has proved very effective The different parts of the celery plant contain well over twenty-five anti-inflammatory constituents. A cup of celery contains well over three hundred and forty milligrams of potassium, which makes it particularly effective considering that Potassium deficiency leads to aggravation of symptoms of arthritis.

The preparation is easy with one teaspoon of celery seeds being placed in a cup and filled with boiling water. Allow to stand for fifteen minutes. Then strain and drink three times a day during an acute arthritic attack for best results. Alternatively it can be eaten fresh.

Devils Claw (Harpagophytum Procumbens) is found only in Africa, Devil’s Claw has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. It is used globally for osteo-arthritis, fibrositis, rheumatism, small joint disease and lower backache. Because of its strong anti-inflammatory properties, Devil’s Claw is not recommended for people with stomach ulcers or heart conditions, unless medically supervised.

    Dong Quai (Dang Gui)

Also called Angelica, this herb has been used in Europe for centuries as a herbal remedy for arthritis. The western variety is known to have twelve anti inflammatory constituents (which decrease the symptoms of pain and swelling of the joints), ten antispasmodics (muscle relaxants) and five anodyne constituents (pain relievers)

This is best taken by placing one tablespoon of the roots of any of the species in a pot and adding of one pint of water which is then brought to the boil and then covered and boiled for two minutes. The pot is removed from the flame and left to stand till it reaches room temperature and then strained and drunk.

Do this two or three times a day for a duration of three weeks. This is followed by a break of ten days before the treatment can be resumed again.

As with all herbal remedies for arthritis, not all these remedies will be instant. They may take a few weeks to build up in the body. But persistence will bring relief.
