    The Legend Of Ayurvedic Medicine: Vata – Pitta – Kapha

    Posted by admin on March 17th, 2010 and filed under remedies allergies | No Comments »

    The legend of the beginning of ayurvedic medicine is that the one creator, Brahma, taught the theories and practices to one of the animal lords, who taught it to the Asvins-the divine twins.

    They taught this to the chief of the shining ones, called Indra. These were the deities of ancient verdict times.

    As mankind fell victim and suffered from ailments and disease the wise men went to Indra and were taught the ancient remedies and healing cures.

    This is the knowledge of medicine, which is divided into 8 separate branches of the divine tree.

    Kaya chikitsa is the medicine of the internal organs and workings of the body;

    Baala is the study of the medicine needed in order to heal children;

    Urdhvanga is the original study of the ears, nose and throat (as well as dentistry.)

    All surgery, including plastic surgery, is called Salya;

    The study of toxicology-stemming originally from the poison extracted from bug bites-is Danstra.

    The study of what we now know as Alzheimer’s and other diseases of the age advanced is called Rasayana

    The study of pregnancy and gyneocology is Prasuti;

    The study of mental illness and demon possession is the treatment called Graha.

    The belief is that there are three elements in /of the body which cause disease. These are called Vata, Pitta and Kapha. We will talk about each one in turn.

    Vata: We are all made up of space and air, with some light, water, and earth thrown in. Vata transmits perceptions to the mind and body and maintains the body’s natural balance. If this energy which is used to transmit so much of the outside world to our inner selves becomes imbalanced, disease sets in.

    Pitta: This is the energy responsible for vision, digestion, heat, hunger and thirst, happiness and intelligence. When this element is out of alignment, it results in depression, weight gain or loss, dehydration, apathy, and digestive problems.

    Kapha disease is the result of lack of conserving and stabilizing the body, we commonly call them viruses or “bugs.”

    All disease is called Vyaadhi. It is the state of the being when we are full of discomfort or pain, but while all are caused by an imbalance in one of the three elements, they are treated according to the classification of the trauma:

    Adhyatmika: physical and constitutional (physical injury, hereditary, and pre-disposition)

    Adhibhautika: contributed to environment (allergies, etc.)

    Aadhidaivika: contributed to gods or spirits (demons. mental imbalances)

    So how does Ayurvedic treatment differ from modern medicine?

    Practitioners of ayurvedic medicine believe that although antibiotics have their uses (take into consideration post surgery antibiotics to edge out infection or post transplant antibiotics which if not taken will surely cause certain death) ayurvedic doctors would rather see the balance of the body resume as quickly as possible.

    The drugs used in ayurveda are derived from vegetables and minerals, with plant alkaloids as the active ingredients. While western medicine relies on this basic principle, the derivatives are often chemically rather than naturally based.

    Before you study up on this medicine further and decide to grow your own medicinal herbs, be forewarned that where the plants grow have everything to do with their potency and ability to fight infection. You absolutely must have the right balance of alkaline and acid in your soil, as well as stringent water and light conditions.

    Some of the remedies might surprise you, as they are virtually the same as Grandma used. The Ayurvedic remedy for a hacking cough? Equal parts honey and the juice from a baked lemon. Grandma probably didn’t know to bake the lemon to increase the acidity, but you get the point.

    How I Beat IBS

    Posted by admin on March 16th, 2010 and filed under remedies allergies | 3 Comments »

    Warning, some symptoms involved in IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), may be disturbing to those unfamiliar with the condition.

    How long has it been since you had a ‘normal’ trip to ‘the john’?

    The challenge started in the 80’s. Having moved to an unfamiliar region, some adjustments are made easier than others. Looking back it’s possible that the beginning was contaminated beef or pork. Some of the symptoms over time have been similar to that type of parasite.

    The education was very slow because the progression of this condition can be extremely slow. It would be a year or more before I was convinced that more than diet or lifestyle were involved.

    This went on for years, actually 20 or more.

    Various Doctors treated these ’symptoms’. Some would blame diet or stress but still run tests that always came back inconclusive. Even the ‘Butt-Scope’ as I call it, was inconclusive which is good news for anyone concerned with their digestive tract.

    Let me add here that ‘Everyone over 45 should have this or similar ’scoping’ done, it can save your life’. Don’t wait. If you have any concerns with your digestive health a Colonoscopy can alleviate your concerns or in the worst case, catch a problem early.

    One syndrome that was found to be related to the situation is ‘Leaky Gut Syndrome’. Naively at first I thought that described my dilemma very well. At one point I found I had to wear panty liners in my shorts. The actual syndrome relates to a different type of leak in the intestines. For the challenge as it related to panty liners a psylium fiber laxative was found to act as a bulking agent allowing a more controlled and timed release, if you know what I mean.

    The situation went on, getting slowly worse until a common link was discovered with other seemingly unrelated minor maladies, and some maybe not so minor.

    Naturally I had tried Homeopathic remedies and supplements over these years figuring ’something has to work’. There were over time, hundreds of nutritional supplements tried, various potions and organic or old world remedies, many of which seemed to effect a change. The changes were usually temporary and ultimately disappointing.

    Through prolonged research over years it became more obvious that this challenge may well be related to other symptoms. Most related symptoms were minor: skin problems, curious allergies, various digestive disruptions, food allergies, minor aches and pains, brain fog, chronic fatigue, dandruff even. Many symptoms were accepted as part of ‘getting older’. But I’m not old yet!

    For a period of time food allergies became quite challenging. They eventually led to 2 years of allergen treatments using hypodermic needles. I had actually become allergic to everyday foods. Allergies to corn, wheat, rice, and dairy products mean there are few meals that you can eat without disturbing effects.

    The research eventually brought me to develop sites and article repositories to bring this collected information together for access from one place. Many other sites describing seemingly unrelated symptoms can be accessed through these resources.

    Our self-education continues.

    I eventually began a regimen using some of the solutions explained on these sites, some in a daily regimen and some as needed. You can benefit from my long trial and error education avoiding the ‘dead ends’ and ‘false starts’.

    The first step is an intestinal purge. This something most ‘Western Types’ have put off for far too long anyway. Following the purge a comprehensive attack on the underlying pathology and then the regimen shows you how to maintain your newly restored health and energy with its new possibilities.

    Some of these supplement and nutritional programs require a membership, but don’t require a purchase.

    Check with your Physician and if acceptable to them, the regimen will have you feeling better than you thought you could feel again in a few months.

    You will be able to maintain this new found level of health easily once attained.

    P. S. It’s time to take your life, energy and social life back. Are You Ready?

    P. S. S. This is the First Step to your new outlook. Don’t deny yourself the good health that you remember.

    Change your Diet to Cure your Constipation

    Posted by admin on March 15th, 2010 and filed under remedies allergies | 4 Comments »

    There are many things that can cause constipation and changing your diet will almost always help no matter what the cause. Some of the causes can be a diet low in natural fiber, food allergies, not drinking enough fluids, overuse of laxatives and not enough exercise.

    Constipation can also be caused by a more serious health condition such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, colon cancer and irritable bowel syndrome — just to name a few. If your constipation does not get better with diet and natural remedies, you might have something more serious and should see your doctor right away.

    Dietary Suggestions:

    Drink lots of water throughout the day — about 8 glasses. Why is so much water necessary? Food is ground up in our stomachs and then passes in liquid form into the small intestine. This is where the nutrients are removed. It then goes into the colon and water is removed so that the stool can form. Sometimes too much water is extracted causing the stool to become hard and difficult to pass. This is why you need adequate water in your diet.

    Increase your dietary fiber as it helps retain water in the stools. Oat bran and ground flax seeds can be incorporated in your diet by adding them to your hot cereal, muffins or in your smoothy. Also, eating lots of raw fruits (with the skins) and vegetables will help increase your daily fiber. Keep the skins on your potatoes also.

    Add prunes or prune juice to your diet as they have a mild laxative effect. Prunes have traditionally been used to keep the bowels regular. Raisins are also good.

    Limit or avoid sugar and processed foods as much as possible.

    Taking probiotics can also be helpful — such as acidophilus, lactobacillus and bifidobacterium. You can find these in yogurt, kefir and other fermented foods or you can buy them in capsule form.

    Here are some other foods that are recognized as having a laxative effect: coconuts, avocados, dates, dried apricots, nuts (almonds, walnuts, etc.), seeds, olives, figs, pineapple, grapes and green apples.

    Drinking aloe vera juice can have a balancing effect on your intestinal flora and may help eliminate your constipation.

    Eating a diet of whole foods instead of processed foods, fast foods and deep fried foods can cure many a health problem and get your body back in balance, including balancing your digestive system.

    Green drinks or freshly juiced vegetables and fruit can help keep you regular. They are also an excellent way to improve your health and just feel better all around as they are loaded with vitamins, minerals and many other beneficial nutrients.

    Two other diet tips: Chew your food well and eat regular small meals throughout the day. Don’t skip meals or eat too much at once.

    If you suspect food allergies, you can either do an elimination diet or get tested to find out what foods you are allergic to. An elimination diet has you leave out a suspected food and see if you feel better. Then you reintroduce the suspected food and notice how you react. This way you can find out what you are allergic to one food at a time. Food allergies can cause constipation, so finding out what foods you are allergic to and avoiding those foods can be very helpful.

    Well those are my tips for improving your diet to help cure your constipation. Also, don’t forget to exercise!

    How To Get Menopausal Relief With These Natural Herbs For Hot Flashes

    Posted by admin on March 14th, 2010 and filed under remedies allergies | No Comments »

    Menopause is an inevitable stage in every woman’s life. It is the time when the decline of hormones significantly affects all body systems. Due to this natural drop in hormones, some natural side effects will also occur. One of the most annoying to most women is hot flashes. This uncomfortable hot sensation drives most women to seek different remedies to alleviate the problem, including natural herbs for hot flashes. Hot flashes are not really a disease, even though it may feel that way. These days, the type of treatment you use can be very important to your future health.

    Women’s Health Initiative or WHI is an organization concerned with issues relating to menopause. In the past, Hormone Replacement Therapy had become the accepted treatment to ease hot flashes. As the popularity of HRT increased, WHI conducted studies to uncover the risks. The clinical study concluded that the risk of having complications is heightened with HRT. Stroke, blood clots, breast cancer and heart disease are some of the related risks. In addition, there are other side effects associated with HRT, such as breast tenderness and leg pains.

    Although HRT can reduce the chances of osteoporosis, the other risks can be far more life-threatening. As women and the medical community became increasingly aware of this, many have increasingly begun using herbs for hot flashes. Studies are continuously conducted to explore the benefits of herbs in medicine, especially in terms of hot flashes. Certain plants are found to be effective for relief of the symptoms.

    Soy beans are known to contain isoflavones which are effective chemicals to decrease the harshness of hot flashes. Isoflavones also help in the production of hormones to compensate for the menopausal decline.

    Another herb which is frequently recommended even by medical science is black cohosh. It has an efficiency percentage of 90% when used to relieve symptoms, making it the most effective herb for hot flashes. Scientific laboratory tests have further demonstrated the advantages of black cohosh. One of the big ones is that this herb neither encourages the growth of the cancerous estrogens nor thickens the lining of the uterus. In addition, there are other health benefits that black cohosh offers aside from those associated with hot flashes.

    Other herbs that can relieve hot flashes are red clover plants. Historically, native healers made use of these plants to correct hormonal imbalances. For those women who have allergies to soy beans, red clover is a good alternative. It also contains isoflavones similar to those found in soy, making it another good herb for hot flashes.

    Sarsaparilla is another herb that has become a popular subject for studying hot flash remedies, as well as cancer prevention. Just like red cover, sarsaparilla has also been used to correct hormonal imbalance going all the way back to the infancy of this country. To guarantee the effectiveness of these herbs for hot flashes, sarsaparilla can be added to black cohosh and the combined nutrients can be used as dietary supplements for menopausal women.

    Natural herbs are safe and economical to use. There are rare side effects reported of those utilizing the natural greens in the environment. However, since the use of these herbs involves traditional medicine, some doctors may express their doubts. On the other hand, before trying any herbs for hot flashes, it is important to discuss it with your doctor first. The severity of your symptoms will have a lot to do with your final choice of treatment.
