If your dog is hyperactive and she isn't suppose to be, it could be a result of her diet. Think about what kind of food you are giving her and check the ingredients.

If you need to give her some supplements, let me know. I have some samples (liquid supplement) I will send you to try out with her to see if it helps.

They are for humans but people have been giving them to their pets and horses with great results.

Check out the video below. It does have human/pet testimonials
References :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJKZPmBfDLM

Well it depends on what you are considering hyperactive. There is a very good chance that the dog is not getting enough physical or mental stimulation as they are a very intelligent, demanding, high energy breed. :)

I highly reccomend joining the forums at http://germanshepherdworld.net/ It is a great community of GSD lovers from around the world wanting to share their experiences and knowledge of the breed.
References :
They are very high energy working dogs. They need to be walked for at least 1 hour every day. Give walking a try or maybe use a backpack on her. It will tire her and make her less hyper.
References :
The only cure for allergies is desensitization shots. These shots take one or two years to start helping. You would need to go to the allergist once per week for several years.
References :
The answer to this question will ultimately be up to you as a family and varies from child to child. Considering the facts that you are reporting "biting, punching, kicking AND pulling our hair", the level of violence in both your child and your home can only be described as very high, and very, very dangerous, both for your other child(-ren) and yourselves. It is also not a surprise he's 13, as this is just about the age when his male hormones will kick in on an extreme level. I personally have no problem with you trying elimination diets, herbs, homeopathy, energy work, crystals. I use them in my day to day life with great success. They may all work with your son. They may equally as well NOT work. From my perspective as a human being, as a parent, and as an Auntie of a little 5 year old boy with autism who has bitten, kicked, punched, slapped in the face and attacked my sister with a kitchen knife before, you have the responsibility to protect your other children from your son. You also have the responsibility to protect yourselves, Dad and Mum, from this kid, who could potentially be lethal to one or all of you, yes, without intending it, and yes, without being responsible for his actions either. I used to be PROFOUNDLY against allopathic medications (drugs), and any kind of medical intervention whatsoever. This was when I was young and ignorant and arrogant. Having seen my sister become so sleep-deprived from dealing with a little boy who simply could not and would not either go to sleep nor stay asleep, and having witnessed that little autistic boy so anxiety ridden that he quite literally could work himself into a psychotic state, I now both KNOW and believe that there is a time and a place for EVERYTHING under the sun, medications included, especially in families who deal with children with disabilities. I'm not saying don't try the alternatives. Try them all. Some may work very well for you. What I'm saying is the level of acting out and danger to yourselves and your other children is NOT to be under-estimated, nor is it not to be dealt with IMMEDIATELY. I will say a couple of other things: 1) It's nice that your son "has everything any child could want". It's completely irrelevant to the serious situation at hand, however, and may well NOT be in your child or any child's best interests. Buying things, and procuring stuff will NOT address these issues whatsoever, and may well be both setting up this problem and exacerbating it. It sets up an issue of no boundaries and of expecting to get whatever one wants, whenever one wants. Sorry, hon, but it's not going to be possible to buy your way out of this situation unless you're looking at purchasing either bodyguards for you and your daughter, or time away in a clinical setting for your son. 2) I would strongly suggest you get some training, some martial arts training for your daughter, husband and self in physical behaviour modification and how to deal with someone who potentially is only going to get bigger, stronger, faster and more violent as he grows. Some of the most primal senses are that of a) what causes pain and discomfort, to oneself and others, and b) energetically and physically knowing when one has the behavioural or physical advantage in a confrontation. Your son may not be able to speak, but believe me, he's using violence and acting out because he has found a) he gets what he wants with it and b) it works and he gets to control the situation. You need to immediately teach him violence will NOT work, that it will hurt HIM profoundly (and sorry, but the only way to teach this is to hurt him back, and WORSE, so he gets it QUICKLY.) What I am advocating here is NOT abuse and not wounding. It is a form of physical teaching your son requires in order to learn his place in the family constellation and the world, and secondly, in order to stop hurting those people around him. The primary teaching needs to come from your husband and you, and it needs to come IMMEDIATELY. You can modify his behaviour immediately, in the moment, in such ways as will be very uncomfortable for him, but that will not hurt him. If you show any hesitation, or any fear about doing this, you son will have the upper hand and will continue to have it. Forever. Even with children without disabilities, parents are often YEARS behind where their children actually are developmentally and manipulatively. I'm telling you, you're dangerously out of touch as to how to deal with this kid. Time to go get some physical and martial arts training, NOW. You may want to contact your local police department for information on how to get training in holds and take-downs, and in how to interact with and control the behaviour of someone who is violent, disabled, and not able (yet) to control his own behaviour on a timely basis or with verbal cuing. I'd say the exact same things to you if you were dealing with an out-of-control pet. You will need to deve
References :
I am the sister of a mentally retarded man, the aunt of a 5yo boy with autism, and have dealt with disabled people all my life, including professionally.
Do some research on the benefits of a gluten free diet for your autistic son. A lot of people with autistic children now give their child a gluten free diet and have found that it works.

Also, cutting out all artificial colours, sweeteners (particularly aspartame), flavours, MSG etc. may help. I have done this with my son and it has helped.

A herbal medicine may not have the strength to help. I have given my son Passiflora and 5htp and it has helped a bit, but he doesn't suffer from aggression.
References :
All the herbs mentioned are very good for calming a person. I have worked with many autistic children. I have noticed huge changes in many autistic students when things such as HFCS, Red dye 40, gluten, MSG, and other additives were taken out of their diet. I have noticed the biggest changes in extremely aggressive behavior when Red dye 40 was taken out of diets. I would suggest the possibility of taking your son to a nutritionist or specialist. It is possible he has an allergy. I would also suggest looking into TEACCH or other similar strategies used for children and young adults with autism. Setting up a work schedule often help with these kinds of behaviors. I am fully trained in this strategy. Feel free to email me if you have any interest. alc0035@yahoo.com
References :
me..cert. elementary and special education teacher
